I have given the generic title ‘Légende d’Eer’ [‘The Myth of Er’] to these texts because this myth, which paradoxically brings Plato’s Republic to an end, incorporates ideas of morality, of destiny, of the physical and the extra-physical, of death, of life, all this within a closed system which at the same time is very poetic for its apocalyptic visions. I. Xenakis (1922 – 2001)

XENAKIS | La Légende d’Eer is a performative audiovisual work/installation designed by Tempo Reale to reinterpret a historical 1977 composition by the great composer.

This is a new exploration of the monumental multimedia work which in 1978 commemorated the opening of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and was performed for three months in a shell-shaped installation called “Diatope”, composed of about 1700 lightbulbs, elaborate laser movements, and 400 mirrors. From a sonic point of view. The original work brings into play relationships and structures that make purely electronic materials dialogue with instrumental sounds, where the microphone pickup and processing amplify the timbral microstructures, integrating them into an “algorithmic” logic of great expressive power.

Tempo Reale has imagined an organism which, thanks to a hundred self-built luminous devices taken from the contemporary, everyday world, almost a thousand metres of cables, and at least nine loudspeakers, lives and inhabits a space in a site specific manner, “invading” the floor of the place where it is welcomed. The public is free to experience the location, immersing themselves into a new and spectacular acoustic and visual dimension.
