SCONCERTO PER I DIRITTI
Tempo Reale has participated in the preparation of sound devices for the performance Sconcerto per i Diritti (Sconcerto for Rights), hosting a residency with Davide Sacco and Agata Tomsic / ErosAntEros.
Article 1. Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected.
Two actresses, Silvia Pasello and Agata Tomsic, give voice to the articles of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. They embody two figures from another world, perhaps from the future, who are exploring key concepts such as Dignity, Freedom, Equality, Solidarity, Citizenship, and Justice, testing how much these are actually applied in our times. They converse with steel plates, which are spaceships or portals between their dimension and ours; two metal sheets which, when struck by the actresses and reworked by the live electronics of Davide Sacco, become musical instruments within a sound environment from which the notes of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony emerge. This way, the metallic sounds, which echo back to the world of mines and steelworks on which the European Union’s economy was based at its outset, back when it was still known as the European Coal and Steel Community, merge with the famous final theme of the Ode to Joy, the musical representation of equality and brotherhood among peoples, the instrumental version of which has been chosen as the European anthem in 1972.
What is a right? How is it protected? How does an individual relate to the legal and political limits with which our society is organised?
These are some of the questions that resonate within a multilingual setting, where words, sound, and image enjoy a mutual exchange of roles. Another fundamental element is represented by the drawings by artist-activist Gianluca Costantini, winner of Amnesty International Italia’s “Art and Human Rights” prize in 2019, who for years has represented the monstrosity of the present within his works. These images also emerge from the plates’ surface, along with images from reality, to reveal how the rights declared by our democracies are sadly, in practice, still disregarded.
“We became aware of the existence of a right to have rights (…) only when millions of people emerged who had lost and could not regain these rights because of the new global political situation. The trouble is that this calamity arose not from any lack of civilization, backwardness, or mere tyranny, but, on the contrary, that it could not be repaired, because there was no longer any “uncivilized” spot on earth, because whether we like it or not we have really started to live in One World. Only with a completely organized humanity could the loss of home and political status become identical with expulsion from humanity altogether.”
