Yuval Avital, Rivers, sound performance for vocal crowd and loudspeakers (2015/2018)
New production commissioned by Progetto RIVA *
Rivers is a work by Israeli composer Avital (Jerusalem 1977), examining a topical social and cultural matter and at the same time offering itself as an incitement to solidarity and a reflection on the theme of the river, both in the literal sense and as a metaphor of migratory flow. The river in the work has a double value, on the one hand an actual sound flowing through the city, on the other a human river represented by Coro CONfusion which recreates a polyphony of sounds and noises using hands, gestures, and voices, following simple sound instructions. Coro CONfusion, directed by Benedetta Manfriani, is a multi-ethnic choir formed by a group of refugees coming from various different countries. The choir works regularly with the popular repertoire of its varied musical traditions as well as on works by contemporary musicians.
