Pauline Oliveros, Ear Rings for four performers (1995)
After last year’s project dedicated to electric guitar, Tempo Reale turns towards the most advanced musical experimentation in the world of string instruments, highlighting a small cross section of new and unconventional uses for one of the most ancient and widespread instrument types in the musical world. Four musicians, with just as many self-constructed instruments physically based on various types of strings, will be performing a score written by American composer Pauline Oliveros. Oliveros (1932 – 2016) was one of the most significant and influential figures in North American music from the post-war period to today: her work Ear Rings is a score that incorporates many of her revolutionary concepts, integrating structure, improvisation, timbre research, and auditory concentration.
