Composition and performance workshop on voice in electroacoustic music

    11-14 September, 2021

    Limonaia di Villa Strozzi

    Tempo Reale, Florence

Workshop held by Luigi Ceccarelli with the participation of Elena Bucci. Tempo Reale is resuming its in-person education activity by reconnecting to the theme of voice, which had already been addressed during the Studio Vox cycle. Luigi Ceccarelli is one of the leading Italian experts in the use of voice in electroacoustic music. He has produced a long series of acousmatic compositions, radio works, and music for voice theatre. The workshop is directed towards the creation of a collective composition, following all the stages of the compositional process: the selection of materials, the composition, work with performers, and public performance. A variety of voice material processing techniques will be explored, using digital sound processing and live electronics. The workshop will also include the presence of Elena Bucci, who will work with the participants in the final phase of the programme. The works composed at the workshop will then be performed in a public restitution event within the Tempo Reale Festival. This event may also include a live performance by some of the participants. The workshop will take place in the spacious environment of Limonaia di Villa Strozzi, where the distance between participants can be comfortably respected.

LUIGI CECCARELLI_ Since the 1970s, Luigi Ceccarelli has dedicated himself to electroacoustic music composition with live performance. His works are generated by instrumental sounds and by natural sounds that are processed electronically in real time and emitted using multi-channel spatialization techniques.

He has received international awards from many institutions (IMEB of Bourges, Ars Elettronica of Linz, Hungarian television, Canadian Opus award). Besides the purely musical sphere, he has also dedicated himself to musical theatre, working on shows with Teatro delle Albe and Fanny & Alexander. For these works he has received the UBU award, the Belgrade Bitef Festival award, and the Sarajevo Mess Festival award. In the 1980s he worked as a musician with choreographer Lucia Latour, and later with the Norwegian dance company Wee, and with South African choreographer Robin Orlin. In the 1990s he created radio works produced by Rai RadioTre with scripts by Stefano Benni, Valerio Magrelli, and Elias Canetti.

He is one of the founding members of Edison Studio, where he has created the soundtracks for various movies from the 1910s, published by Cineteca di Bologna. Among these is the soundtrack of the film “Inferno”, which received the AITS award in 2011. From 1979 to 2020 he has held the chair of Electronic Music at the Conservatory of Music of Perugia, and later also in Latina.

Over the years he has often approached non-European music, creating works influenced by the music of other musical cultures. In recent years, he has also dedicated himself to improvisational concerts as an electroacoustic performer.
