MUSICA ISTANTE

THE PROJECT
The project by Tempo Reale and Centro Servizi Culturali Santa Chiara, in collaboration with Conservatorio di Musica G. B. Martini di Bologna and Laboratorio di Filologia musicale dell’Università degli Studi di Trento, is based on a design method which recaptures concepts developed by improvisers and conductors such as Bruno Maderna, Butch Morris, and Vinko Globokar, integrating them in an original manner using a series of experiences hailing from electroacoustic music and modulating them into completely new creative frameworks.
With a series of operational meetings, the conductor teaches the performers a vocabulary of ideographic signs and symbols which allow the collective construction of a musical work in real time, developing and transforming single timbral, melodic, and harmonic elements as well as more organised structures such as repetitions, phrasings, and solos.
A music of total improvisation which can be further identified as a collective expression, where the creative sensitivity of the participants meets the spontaneity of improvisation, while searching for new musical language structures.
This kind of workshop has already had important experiences in ensembles which include: ORT-Orchestra della Toscana, Orchestra dei Giovanissimi di Bologna, the Ensemble of Bremen’s Hochschule für Künste, Banda Elettroacustica del Conservatorio di Bologna, and Tempo Reale Electroacoustic Ensemble.
WORKSHOP CURATORS
The workshop will be directed by Francesco Giomi, assisted by a musician and a sound technician.
TARGET AND STAFF
The project is open to all professional musicians active in the area and beyond who may wish to undertake an innovative and creative experience. The number of musicians involved may be variable, with a minimum of 8 performers and a maximum of 12: digital electronic instruments, analogue electronic instruments, voice, and any type of fully autonomous acoustic instruments are all admitted. Instruments which may be too complicated to transport (piano, keyboard percussion instruments, large percussion instruments, etc.) are not admitted.
The call for action for the workshop and concerts will be open to young Italian and international musicians. No technical limitations are established, but priority will be given to musicians who already possess a technical formation and are capable of expressing the idea of experimental research.
No participation fee shall be required from participants, but they will be considered and remunerated with an attendance compensation for the two concert sessions, in compliance with current legislation.
LOCATION AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The location chosen for the workshop is the foyer of Auditorium Fausto Melotti (located within the MART complex). Tempo Reale will install a high-quality audio system, available throughout the related period, for the amplification of digital and acoustic instruments.
PERIOD
Collective/individual workshop: April 26th to 29th, 2017
Concerts: April 29th, 2017 (Within the MUSICA MACCHINA 2017 Event)
1st concert session (21:00 hrs)
Remarks and discussion (22:00 hrs)
2nd concert session (23:00 hrs)
SELECTION OF MUSICIANS
Musicians interested must present a participation request by March 31st, 2017, attaching their personal data and a short biography suitably documenting the instrumental/electronic experience achieved. One or more links to good quality music videos may also be included, relative to a performance, which may eventually help certify one’s technical level and propension to improvisation. The latter are both key factors for the selection.
The application, and eventual requests for information, must be sent to the address workshop@temporeale.it. Tracks included as file attachments in the application email, or sent via upload services such as WeTransfer or others, will not be taken in consideration.
A commission chosen by Tempo Reale will select the participants, who will promptly be notified regarding their admission.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Besides their own musical instrument, musicians selected will need to bring their own customary microphone amplification system (if equipped) for acoustic instruments, and a balanced audio cable with XLR output at least 5 metres long for electronic instruments.
