LIVE CODING | Workshop on Sonic Pi held by Sam Aaron
Second event in the series of workshops on live coding, helping to popularise the culture of programmed digital music.
Registration deadline: February 5th
Sonic Pi is an interactive digital musical instrument that is controlled using a programming language. It was conceived and created by Sam Aaron in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation and the University of Cambridge Computer Lab. Initially designed to help teach programming, it has later established itself as an extremely adaptive and powerful performance tool, thanks to its continued development, which has allowed its use to become increasingly intuitive, in particular when using live coding.
This workshop is the second event in the cycle of training courses on live coding, which Tempo Reale began last year with the workshop on SuperCollider held by Alexandra Cardenas. This cycle aims to popularise the culture of improvised digital music offering an alternative, interactive, and fascinating way to play music, allowing to develop unique adaptation and interaction skills, which are completely different from those offered by conventional instruments. As a matter of fact, live coding provides a new frontier in the performance field, as the musical action now takes place entirely within the musician’s mind, forcing them to “translate” their musical thought into text, in an improvised and live setting. Sonic Pi is one of the most effective instruments for this approach, and Sam Aaron will guide the participants through his invention in an engaging and interactive manner, so as to immediately begin to get the best out of this instrument.
Participants are warmly invited to install Sonic Pi on their computers before the workshop, and to bring their own headphones.
Programme:
morning 10-13 hrs: introduction of the instrument and of its main functions, in order to allow participants to find their bearings with the instrument and to understand its potential.
afternoon 14-17 hrs: participants will be invited to make use of the notions they have learned, and to experience the potential of Sonic Pi.
This hourly division of the programme is not strict, and will instead adapt to the requirements and attitudes of the individual participants, developing and enhancing each one’s skills and potential.
Cost: 60€
The workshop will be held in English
To register, please fill in and send the registration form, along with a copy of a valid identity document, to corsi@temporeale.it within February 5th, 2020

Biographical note
Sam Aaron, creator of Sonic Pi, is an internationally renowned live coding expert and is active as a performer, public speaker, and scientific communicator. He has a doctorate in computer science and has been a researcher at the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory, where Sonic Pi was initially developed. His accounts, seminars, and performances regularly involve audiences of all ages and backgrounds, also thanks to his personal and creative approach to the subject of live coding. He is active as a performer on an international level: from the Royal Albert Hall to the clubs of Berlin, from science fairs to the BBC. Rolling Stone Magazine has described his set at the clubs of Berlin, from science fairs to the BBC. Rolling Stone Magazine has described his set at the clubs of Berlin, from science fairs to the BBC. Rolling Stone Magazine has described his set at Moogfest 2016 as a performance that appears to “transcend the present”.
